A Tale of Two API’s, STRATIX and SigmaNest

Lafayette Steel & Aluminum has implemented STRATIX/SigmaNEST, a real-time bi-directional integration between the STRATIX metal enterprise software and the CAD/CAM plate nesting software SigmaNEST.

Lafayette, IN. Lafayette Steel & Aluminum, an Oscar Winski Company, with headquarters in Lafayette, Indiana, has implemented the STRATIX/SigmaNEST product, a real-time bi-directional packaged integration between STRATIX and the CAD/CAM plate nesting system SigmaNEST.

The STRATIX/SigmaNEST product is related to the metal service center software, STRATIX. It represents a joint effort between Invera, the metal industry software specialist, and SigmaTEK Systems, the leading nesting software developer. Lafayette Steel & Aluminum has been live and operational on the STRATIX metal industry ERP at their Steel Service Center and Aluminum Fabrication divisions since 2006.

STRATIX/SigmaNEST is a transaction management product that enables STRATIX inventory and orders to be dynamically downloaded to SigmaNEST, and the final optimized nest to be uploaded back into STRATIX without any manual intervention. SigmaNEST is the leading CAD/CAM nesting system for profile cutting & punching machines.

STRATIX is specialized metal ERP software that handles all types of ferrous and non-ferrous products of all forms, including coils, sheets, structural products, wire, pipe and tubing, rebar, mesh, bars, roll formed products, panels/profiles, and building products.

A seamless integration of native metal industry terminology, functions, and features make STRATIX quick to deploy with minimum implementation costs. The STRATIX software includes sales, purchasing, receiving, inventory management, multi-step production, production scheduling, delivery and logistics planning, invoicing, and financials.

STRATIX/SigmaNEST Benefits

For metal service centers and plate processors that perform plate cutting, plate burning, water-jet cutting, and laser cutting, the introduction of STRATIX/SigmaNEST significantly improves overall company productivity and provides better nesting options. Improvements in productivity include the following:

1. Real-time availability of inventory and remnant stock information to sales
2. Reduction in material costs
3. Improved in planning staff productivity
4. Improved order profitability
5. Improved customer service

Integration of Sales Orders and Inventory

STRATIX/SigmaNEST eliminates the need to manually load inventory and new orders into SigmaNEST and automatically forwards inventory allocation after nesting from SigmaNEST to STRATIX. Through the use of bi-directional product code mapping and the real-time transfer of order and inventory transactions between STRATIX and SigmaNEST, the STRATIX/SigmaNEST product maintains live-update inventory and remnant synchronization.

Bill Rothrock, VP of Operations for the Oscar Winski Company, commented, “This packaged integration has eliminated the double-entry that was required when the two systems were not fully integrated. Our production planner now works mostly in SigmaNEST to do the entire planning function.”

Inventory Control

Remnants are recorded with diagrams and plate detail and stored in STRATIX for availability to all users within an organization.

Production planners use SigmaNEST to optimize material utilization and processing speed for improved cutting efficiency. When the nesting process is complete, the nest information is transmitted to STRATIX so that STRATIX jobs can be automatically created. STRATIX jobs can then be scheduled and recorded in STRATIX.

After jobs are completed, STRATIX will automatically inform SigmaNEST of accurate inventory usage and remnant information so that the SigmaNEST inventory remains accurate and the related work-orders are completed properly.

Lawrence Tabachnick, ERP Systems Administrator for the Oscar Winski Company, commented, “The packaged integration has substantially improved the productivity of the production planner that plans and handles the production. I would estimate that it has saved 2-3 hours per day for that individual, and, as we expand our laser plate cutting capabilities, the time-savings increases significantly further. We were also very pleased with the support we received from Invera and SigmaTEK Systems during the straight-forward implementation of this product.”
